A recently emerging strategy for widespread distribution of naloxone to detainees released from jail facilities is through a vending machine. These machines can be customized to provide Naloxone and other supplies in a secure, organized, and stigma-free manner. We highlight three examples of states that have facilitated efforts to distribute Naloxone through county jail facilities.
We describe the process by which states can support Naloxone distribution, including the various funding streams used for this effort—Bureau of Justice Assistance's COSSAP, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Overdose Data to Action, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's State Opioid Response—and then discuss the barriers and facilitators toward distributing Naloxone through vending machines in jail facilities.
